Egg donation is more complicated than sperm donation. Eggs cannot be frozen effectively yet, so the donor and the woman receiving the donation must have their cycles adjusted so that they egg can be removed from the donor and implanted into the intended mother. Both must take medication to adjust their cycles. The donor must undergo a minor surgical procedure to extract the egg, causing the risk of complications such as infection or possible damage to her ovaries. Before the procedure, the donor is tested for various diseases. However, because the egg donation must occur immediately, eggs, unlike sperm, cannot be tested extensively.
It is highly recommended that both the donor and recipient, as well as their partners, undergo counseling to help them deal with the hormonal fluctuations of the process, as well as the emotional consequences.
Once the eggs are harvested, they are fertilized using an IVF technique or a GIFT or ZIFT technique. Fertilized eggs are implanted in the intended mother and she carries the pregnancy.
